Open position for Research Coordinator

A part-time Research Coordinator post is available in the Drosophila Connectomics group, at the Department of Zoology, University of Cambridge, directed by Dr Greg Jefferis and Dr Matthias Landgraf. Positions are available for 1 year with the possibility of extension up until 30 Sep 2024 subject to project status and funding. Preferred starting date from mid-April, but there is flexibility. Working hours are 40-50% of full-time, 14.6-18.25 hours per week.

The Drosophila Connectomics group is part of an international collaboration generating the “connectome” of the central nervous system of the fruit fly. This will be the first complete nanometre resolution brain connection map for an animal with eyes, legs and complex cognitive and motor behaviour and should have a wide impact on brain research. The project is funded by £6.7M from the Wellcome Trust awarded to the Dept of Zoology as lead organisation in collaboration with groups in Cambridge, Oxford and Janelia Research Campus, USA. The successful candidate will join a team based in Zoology with 13 members that depends heavily on successful teamwork within the group and with external collaborators.

This post will provide administrative/technical support to the group in several areas, including grant applications and portfolio, writing scientific papers, open research and HR matters and recruitment. The successful candidate will report to the project lead, Dr Marta Costa. Candidates should be educated to HND/HNC, Level 4/5 vocational qualifications, degree level, or possess equivalent level of practical experience. They should have demonstrable experience in using Microsoft Office or similar including word processor, spreadsheet and presentation tools. Excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills are also essential. Experience in an administrative role, as well as writing or editing referenced academic papers, essays or technical documentation would be desirable. Some understanding of science and the process of scientific research, as well as the research funding landscape would also be advantageous.
