August neuron of the month

By Fiona Love

August’s neuron of the month is a large lateral horn (LH) output neuron. Thanks to the resolution of the FAFB data set, we can annotate individual synapses, which tells us how this neuron is carrying information across the brain. This neuron gets most of its input in the right LH (yellow), a centre of innate olfactory behaviour, and then synapses onto other neurons in the neighbouring superior lateral protocerebrum (SLP, in blue), a higher processing region, as well as the SLP and LH on the opposite side of the brain. Incoming synapses are shown in cyan, while output synapses are red.
