Research Assistant Positions
We are currently recruiting for two research assistants to work on a new Aedes aegypti brain volume. Successful applicants will work with very large volume electron-microscopy connectomics data as part of a £4.8M Wellcome international collaborative award with Harvard Medical School, Boston University, and the MRC LMB in Cambridge. This project will produce the first synaptic-resolution whole brain connectome for a disease-causing animal, the mosquito that transmits viruses for Zika, dengue, and yellow fever.
Research assistants in our group work with electron-microscopy image data, annotate and proofread automatically segmented reconstructions of neurons, develop open source tools for data analysis/processing, and perform neuron morphology, connectivity, graph/circuit analyses etc. to obtain biological insight.
You can find more information and a link to the application form here. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, with a final deadline of 8 June, 2025. Interviews are expected to take place in Cambridge the week of 16 June.
Research Associate Positions
Expressions of interest for research associate (postdoc) positions in our group are welcome.
Applicants will work with very large volume electron-microscopy Drosophila connectomics data as part of a £6.7M Wellcome international collaborative award with HHMI Janelia Research Campus, the MRC LMB in Cambridge and the University of Oxford. This project will produce the first synaptic-resolution connectome for a whole adult Drosophila central nervous system (brain and nerve cord).
We are especially interested in candidates with a relevant PhD in neurobiology/circuit neuroscience with strong background in bioinformatics OR with a PhD in computer science with experience in neuroscience.
Please get in touch with us.
Internships
Expressions of interest for summer projects for next year, as well as 3-6 month internships, are welcome.
When applying for these internships, please include:
- A CV detailing your academic achievements, any research experience and other information you think might be helpful
- The names of at least two referees who can comment on your aptitude for research.
- A short statement about why you would be interested in the position and this area of research
Desired skills
The posts in the group are suitable for individuals with a bachelors degree in Neuroscience or another Biological subject or a strong quantitative background (Physical Sciences, Computer Science, Maths, Engineering) and some basic understanding of neuroscience. Full training will be given but it would be helpful to have some background in at least one of neural circuits, Drosophila, programming/image analysis. You will have the opportunity to help define your specific research directions, to present your work at conferences and contribute to scientific papers. You should have good communication and team-working skills and above all be strongly motivated to understand the circuit basis of brain function and behaviour.
If you’d like any other information, get in touch with us.
Future Opportunities
Job opportunities will be advertised here, on Cambridge University’s Research job site, our Department of Zoology page and also via Twitter.
